Working with gold leaf is such a joy and can add a whole new element of expression to an artwork. Many people have asked for supplies and instructions so Vanessa Lewis (Apothecary Artist) has put together a small sample kit which includes all you need to have a go at this centuries old tradition.
This little kit includes basic instructions, a tiny bottle of gold size (glue) and two (5cm high)bottles of random bits of foiling leaf. The bits vary in size and are all useful for delicate work and/or playing with the foiling process.
Good quality composition gold comprising of copper and zinc and made in the traditional way by beating the metals into a very fine leaf so that it may be applied to paper and other porous materials. The silver is 100% aluminium and the copper is 100% copper. The gold size is a very good quality Australian made glue specifically designed for gilding work. It is washed up with water (and I recommend a mild soapy mix to clean your brush after application).
*the size should cover an area approx. 420 x 600mm of evenly applied application
